Teachers not allowed to come to government schools in jeans, T-shirts; instructions issued in Himachal

Shimla: Teachers in government schools in Himachal Pradesh have been banned from wearing jeans, T-shirts, brightly coloured and fashionable dresses and heavy jewellery. The Education Department issued these instructions in a consultation regarding the voluntary dress code. However, the department has not implemented any dress code for teachers. This consultation is not mandatory, but it has been said to adopt a professional and formal dress code in view of setting an example among the students and maintaining the dignity of educational institutions.

In a letter issued by Education Secretary Rakesh Kanwar, it was said that many teachers have already taken positive steps in this regard. Many teachers have voluntarily adopted dignified and uniform dress, which is a commendable example for others. In the advice issued by the Education Secretary, it has been said that teachers are role models for students. Their mannerisms and dressing styles leave a lasting impression on young minds. It has also been recommended that non-teaching staff should be encouraged to follow the standards of professional dress. The implementation of the dress code has been left to the discretion of individual school authorities.

Education department suggested this dress code
The suggested dress code for male teachers includes formal trousers and shirts in light colours, while female teachers can opt for formal Indian attire such as salwar-kameez with dupatta, saree, churidar suit or formal western wear. Maroon or blue blazers, professional shoes and proper grooming standards are also encouraged. Schools are free to customise the dress code according to local preferences and weather conditions and can choose specific days to follow it.
