Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Tuesday, took a shot at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on the symbolic motion passed by INDIA bloc to impeach Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. He said that Rahul Gandhi will be Prime Minister in the mock parliament but in real Parliament, Narendra Modi will remain the Prime Minister.
Reacting to Opposition’s symbolic impeachment exercise and a protest rally against alleged malpractice in electoral rolls, Sarma said Congress leaders tried multiple times to make Rahul Gandhi the Prime Minister.
“Sonia ji wanted Rahul Gandhi to become the prime minister. Many efforts were made to do so. But since none of the efforts could bear any fruits, they have organised a mock parliament in the lawns of Kharge Ji’s residence, and in that he (Rahul Gandhi) has become the PM. In the mock parliament Rahul Gandhi will be PM. But in parliament, Modi Ji will be PM,” Sarma said.
Symbolic Motion By INDIA Bloc To CEC
Sarma’s comments come amid a political tussle between BJP and INDIA bloc on the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and allegations by the Opposition against the removal of rightful voters.
Earlier on Saturday, INDIA bloc leaders passed a symbolic motion seeking impeachment of CEC Gyanesh Kumar in mock parliament.
The session was chaired by former Lok Sabha Speaker and Congress leader Meira Kumar, and saw attendance by leaders of several Opposition parties.
This move prompted an exchange of words between the Opposition and BJP. Rahul Gandhi said Opposition will not let the CEC ‘escape’ while BJP leaders condemned the move as “melodrama” and defended constitutional protections provided to the country’s top constitutional functionaries.
Rally By INDIA Bloc Against SIR
On Sunday, INDIA bloc organise a rally in Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan against alleged malpractice in electoral rolls.
Multiple Opposition leaders attended the rally, including Rahul Gandhi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav.
Sarma also headed BJP’s ‘Loktantra Bachao, Arajakta Hatao’ (Save Democracy, Remove Anarchy) padyatra in Shimla on Sunday.
He attacked Rahul Gandhi for his role in SIR.
