Rajbari: Another horrific incident of mob violence occurred in Bangladesh on Wednesday night. A 29-year-old Hindu man, Amrit Mandal alias Samrat, was brutally beaten to death by a mob in Rajbari district. The attack occurred at around 11 p.m. in the Hosaindanga Old Market in Pangsha Upazila. Amrit Mandal was declared dead due to his injuries.
According to Sheikh Moinul Islam, an officer at the Pangsha Model Police Station, locals initially accused Mandal of extortion, which escalated the situation and led to mob violence. Amrit Mandal was locally considered the leader of the “Samrat Bahini.” Police have launched an investigation to identify the perpetrators and determine the sequence of events. Additional security personnel have been deployed to the area to prevent further unrest.
Second Lynching in a Week
This murder is the second incident of mob violence in recent days. On December 18, factory worker Dipu Chandra Das was beaten to death in Bhaluka, Mymensingh district, after he was accused of making derogatory remarks against Islam. After his murder, the mob tied his body to a tree and set it on fire, sparking local and international outrage.
Growing Instability and Protests in Bangladesh
Hours after the Rajbari incident, violent protests erupted in Dhaka against the murder of Sharif Osman Hadi. Following Hadi’s murder, some youth leaders made inflammatory anti-India statements. In recent weeks, Bangladeshi security forces had to stop protesters marching towards the Indian High Commission in Dhaka, and in Chittagong, a mob threw stones at the Indian Assistant High Commission building.
These incidents highlight the serious situation of increasing mob violence and violence against minority communities in Bangladesh.
