Uttarkashi: On the occasion of Falgun Purnima, a unique Holi of Bhasma was celebrated at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple complex in Uttarkashi. Devotees were seen colored with the sacred ashes from the havan kund. After the Maha Aarti of Lord Shiva, hundreds of devotees greeted each other by applying ash. Amid the beats of drums and chants of “Har Har Mahadev,” the Holi revelers danced to traditional songs.
Lord Shiva was anointed in the morning Brahmamuhurta, after which the havan concluded with the rituals. The ashes from the havan were first offered to the Lord and then distributed among the devotees as prasad.
Celebration amidst security concerns
The temple administration made special security arrangements during Bhasma Holi. Devotees were advised to avoid contact with ashes, to cover their noses and mouths, and to take special care of children and the elderly. The entire event showcased a beautiful blend of spirituality and folk culture.
Message of Mortality and Renunciation
Holi with ashes is not just a tradition, but also a philosophy of life. Ashes convey the message that life is fleeting and everything ultimately turns to ashes. Therefore, its core purpose is to abandon ego and live a meaningful life.
This tradition has been observed with faith for years in this place known as the “Kashi of the North.” It is believed that Lord Shiva resides here in his self-manifested form, and this place is also mentioned in the Skanda Purana. Following the example of Varanasi, Holi with ashes is celebrated with reverence and enthusiasm.
