IAF’s ‘Gajraj’ Makes Aviation History! IL-76MD Lands at 13,629 Feet Near China Border in Ladakh

New Delhi: The Indian Air Force (IAF) on Saturday created history when the IL-76MD Heavy Transport Aircraft landed successfully at Nyoma airfield IN the eastern Ladakh region at an altitude of 13,629 FEET, which is the highest altitude landing by such aircraft across the globe.

The IAF took to X and said that this landing showcased the operational capabilities of the aircraft and the high level of expertise, accuracy and professionalism displayed by the crew.

“13,629 FEET. A NEW HEIGHT IN AVIATION HISTORY. An Indian Air Force IL-76MD has scripted history with a successful landing at Nyoma, marking the highest-altitude landing ever achieved by the aircraft anywhere IN the world.”

“Pushing boundaries. Redefining limits. Making history,” the IAF added.

Strategic Importance of Nyoma Airfield

Nyoma airfield IN the eastern Ladakh region is at an altitude of around 13,600 FEET and is located around 25 km from the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.

Landing heavy aircraft at the airfield poses challenges due to the high altitude, rugged terrain and tough atmospheric conditions. The landing therefore is a significant feat for the IAF.

The airstrip will boost the military logistics as it has a runway of 2.7 km. With the airfield located near the China border, it will also play a key role IN air operations at high altitude IN the eastern Ladakh region.

About IAF’s IL-76MD ‘Gajraj’

The IL-76MD, called Gajraj by the IAF, is a Russian-origin four-engine heavy transport aircraft used to carry personnel, military equipment, vehicles and cargo over long distances.

Nyoma Airbase Boosts India’s Border Security

Nyoma airbase located IN the eastern Ladakh region at an altitude of more than 13,000 FEET plays an important strategic role IN the country’s defence infrastructure along the border with China.

The airbase, located around 25 km from the LAC, will boost the military preparedness of India.

The successful landing of the IL-76MD at Nyoma marks a huge milestone IN high altitude aviation. It showcases the IAF’s capabilities to land heavy transport aircraft IN challenging conditions.
