Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reaffirmed India’s push to host the 2036 Olympic Games, emphasizing the country’s growing capability in organizing major global sporting events. Modi made the remarks while virtually addressing the inaugural ceremony of the 72nd Senior National Volleyball Championship in Varanasi.
Strengthening Sports Infrastructure and Experience
In his address, Modi pointed out that India has successfully hosted more than 20 major international sporting events over the past decade, including the U-17 FIFA World Cup and the Hockey World Cup. He said these experiences have helped build confidence and infrastructure necessary for hosting a mega-event like the Olympics.
Commonwealth Games and Olympic Goals
Modi also highlighted that India would host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, framing it as part of a broader strategy to showcase the nation’s sporting credentials and prepare for the 2036 Olympics. The increased focus on athletes’ development and competitive exposure was a key theme of his remarks.
Focus on Athlete Development and Competitive Edge
To nurture talent and boost India’s global sports performance, the government has emphasized schemes such as Khelo India and the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS). These programmes aim to support young athletes through better training, funding, and international exposure, building a pipeline of talent for future competitions.
Growing National Sports Ecosystem
The prime minister’s comments reflect a broader effort to transform India into a global sports hub, with enhanced infrastructure, increased funding, and policy support. If successful, hosting the 2036 Olympics could elevate Indian sports to new heights and further integrate sporting excellence into national development goals.
