Toronto: A 26-year-old Indian-origin woman was shot dead in broad daylight in Toronto, Canada, in what police have described as a targeted attack. Authorities have arrested a 37-year-old suspect and charged him with first-degree murder as investigators continue to probe the motive behind the killing.
Victim Shot in Public Area
The victim, identified as Navneet Kaur, was found with a gunshot wound after police responded to reports of a shooting near Humberwood Boulevard and Rexdale Boulevard on Friday morning. Emergency responders attempted to save her, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the shooting occurred in a public area and not inside a residence.
Eyewitness Describes Chilling Moments
According to an eyewitness, the accused approached Kaur while she was walking, briefly spoke to her, and then opened fire. The witness said there was no visible argument or confrontation before the shooting. After firing a single shot, the suspect fled the scene on foot.
Toronto Police launched a large-scale search operation involving drones and K9 units before locating and arresting the suspect.
Suspect Arrested, Investigation Continues
The accused, identified as Sharanjit Singh, a resident of Brampton, has been charged with first-degree murder and failure to comply with an undertaking.
Investigators believe the killing was a targeted attack and have said there is no ongoing threat to public safety. However, the motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and the homicide unit is continuing its investigation.
Police have appealed to anyone with information or video footage related to the incident to come forward and assist with the investigation.
