Inflation Affects Daily Consumer Goods

Ever since the war between the US, Israel, and Iran centered on the Strait of Hormuz, the supply chain of crude oil and natural gas has been disrupted. Going to the markets, we find that the supply of essential commodities is decreasing, inflation is rising, and according to a survey, the prices of 16 out of 20 essential commodities have increased by up to 36 percent. Retail inflation has reached 4 percent in April. Prices of edible oil, tomatoes, and other essential commodities have also increased. There is a risk of further inflation in the coming months. Bank of Baroda’s Essential Commodity Index has come out, which shows that the inflation index has increased by 1.1 percent annually and 0.3 percent monthly in April. It should be noted that this is the fastest monthly increase since August 2025. The commodities that have suddenly become expensive in the market are sunflower oil by 15 percent, soybean oil by 7.8 percent, and tomatoes by 35.8 percent. While commodities like potatoes, onions, and pigeon pea have not become more expensive, we cannot ignore the fact that prices of oil, gas, metals, and edible oils have risen by up to 78 percent. How can the Indian market remain unaffected by this? One threat is the import of agricultural fertilizers and asphalt used in road construction. These supplies have also been disrupted. The weather is also playing its part; the Meteorological Department has warned of heat waves in Gujarat, Maharashtra, and the eastern coastal states. This will affect the production of tomatoes, onions, and potatoes. India is facing a crisis of inflation due to the ongoing war in West Asia. Opposition parties were campaigning that petrol and diesel prices would be raised after the election results were announced, but these prices have not been increased yet. Yes, the skyrocketing prices of commercial gas cylinders have severely impacted the catering industry, from hotels to street vendors. Prices have been increased secretly.
