Surajkund Fair Tragedy: Martyr Status for Inspector Jagdish Prasad

Inspector Jagdish Prasad, the senior police officer who died while leading rescue efforts after a swing collapsed at the Surajkund International Crafts Festival, will be officially accorded martyr status, officials announced on Sunday. The decision recognises his courage and sacrifice in trying to save the lives of visitors during the tragic incident.

The announcement was made by Director General of Police (DGP) Ajay Singhal, who praised Prasad’s bravery and selfless service. The government has also sanctioned compensation of ₹1 crore for the family and a government job for one family member as part of the state’s support package.

What Led to the Tragedy

The accident occurred around 6 pm on Saturday at the fairgrounds in Faridabad, Haryana, when an amusement ride known as a swing suffered a technical malfunction and collapsed while visitors were riding it. Several people were injured in the mishap.

Inspector Prasad, who was on duty at the event, immediately rushed to the site and led efforts to evacuate and assist those trapped in the structure. During the rescue operation, he sustained serious injuries and later succumbed to them while undergoing treatment.

A Life of Service and Bravery

Prasad, 58, joined the Haryana police force in 1988 and had completed 36 years of distinguished service. He was deployed with the Haryana Armed Police and most recently posted to the Palwal Police Lines.

He was a recipient of the Police Medal, awarded in 2019-20, for his dedicated service. Prasad was just weeks away from retirement, having been scheduled to retire in March 2026, when the tragic incident occurred.

The officer is survived by his wife Sudha Sharma, two daughters — Nidhi and Deepti — and a son Gaurav, all of whom are unmarried and currently pursuing their studies.

Government Response and Investigation

In addition to granting martyr status and financial compensation, authorities have constituted a high-level investigation committee to examine the causes of the swing collapse. The panel, headed by the Additional Deputy Commissioner, is also tasked with reviewing safety protocols at such public events.

A case has been filed against the vendor responsible for the ride, and officials have emphasised that those found negligent will face prosecution. The swing area at the fairground has been cordoned off pending further inspection, while the rest of the festival continues.

Haryana Tourism Minister Dr Arvind Sharma confirmed that the injured persons are now stable and out of danger, and thanked emergency responders for their prompt action.

Local and Public Reaction

Prasad’s death has deeply affected his native village of Dengra in Mathura district, where family members and residents have been paying tribute to his sacrifice. His elder brother, Pradeep, expressed both pride and grief, noting his brother’s long and honourable service in the police force.

The tragic event has also reignited discussions about safety standards at large public fairs and the need for strict adherence to inspection and maintenance protocols to protect visitors.
