1 dead, 9 hurt in gunfire between groups after event at US university

Gunfire erupted among a crowd near a Tennessee university on Saturday afternoon, resulting in the death of a 24-year-old man and injuring nine others, according to police reports.

The shooting occurred around 5 PM as attendees had begun to disperse after gathering for homecoming festivities at Tennessee State University. Metro Nashville Police spokesperson Don Aaron noted that shell casings suggested gunfire was exchanged between two groups across a street near the campus.

Metro Nashville Police Commander Anthony McClain stated that the gunfire did not seem to be directly connected to the university’s events, which included a parade and other celebrations earlier that day, while the football game was happening in a different location when the shooting occurred.

“It’s unfortunate that a few individuals ruined it for everyone,” McClain remarked. “We have to reach a point where we can put an end to this violence.” A police update on social media confirmed the death of a 24-year-old man, while among the victims were also two 12-year-olds and a 14-year-old, all suffering non-critical injuries, according to Aaron.

Police spokesperson Brooke Reese mentioned that at least some of the injured appeared to be involved in the gunfire exchange. Authorities reported that law enforcement and firefighters present for the day’s events responded rapidly to the shooting incident.
