New Delhi: The Defence relationship between France and India has been described as exceptional by French Ambassador Thierry Mathou, who emphasized the strategic intimacy shared by both nations. He noted that their defence cooperation is diverse and includes high-level bilateral and multilateral military exercises across land, air, and naval forces, scheduled for 2024.

Mathou highlighted the importance of strategic autonomy in both countries’ national security doctrines, which allows for independent decision-making regarding partnerships and actions. He mentioned the recent endorsement of a bilateral Defence Industrial Roadmap aimed at prioritizing co-design, co-development, and co-production of defence equipment, alongside strengthening supply chains. Significant progress has been made by defence companies in these areas.

In August 2023, a pivotal contract was established between Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and Safran Helicopter Engines, focusing on the joint development of a new engine for India’s future multi-role helicopter. Additionally, Safran is being considered for collaboration on the co-development of sixth-generation fighter engines in India, promising complete technology transfer.

Mathou also noted the recent participation of India’s INS Tabar in the India-France naval exercise ‘VARUNA,’ underlining the historical significance of armament cooperation between the two countries, which dates back to 1953. The Indian Air Force currently operates Rafale aircraft, and the last of the six Scorpene-class submarines being built in India is nearing commissioning. He emphasized the expansion of their space cooperation as well.

Furthermore, Mathou discussed the recent visit of India’s National Security Advisor, Ajit Doval, to France, predicting new developments in bilateral cooperation. Doval met with French officials, including Defence Minister Sebastien Lecornu and President Emmanuel Macron, to discuss defence collaborations and the implementation of the India-France Horizon 2047 roadmap.

Overall, Mathou expressed confidence in the steady reinforcement of the India-France strategic partnership, which encompasses not only defence but also areas like space, industry, climate action, and cultural exchange.
