Beijing: China has issued a yellow alert for Typhoon Wipha as it approaches the southern coastal regions, bringing expected strong winds and heavy rainfall. The typhoon, located at 19.9°N latitude and 120.2°E longitude at 5 a.m. on Saturday, is moving northwest at a speed of 15-20 km/h.
It is predicted to make landfall between Shenzhen in Guangdong Province and Wenchang in Hainan Province by Sunday afternoon or evening.
China’s weather warning system uses a four-tier color code, with yellow indicating a moderate alert, following the red, orange, and blue levels.
In response, authorities have activated emergency measures, including standby deployment of rescue vessels, anti-pollution ships, and helicopters, to protect coastal communities and residents in the affected areas.
Earlier, China experienced the landfall of Typhoon Danas in July, which affected Zhejiang Province after passing through Taiwan and Wenzhou. The country also prepared for heavy rainfall from Typhoon Wutip last month, which was the first typhoon of the year and made landfall in Hainan on June 13.
Due to the intensifying weather, the Ministry of Water Resources activated a Level-IV emergency response for flooding in Zhejiang and urged local officials to closely monitor weather developments and utilize water infrastructure to safeguard lives and property.
