Italy: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, during the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Fiuggi, Italy, on November 27. Jaishankar shared on X that they had a productive discussion about technology, innovation, clean energy, fertilizers, railways, and investments, as well as perspectives on the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), the situation in Ukraine, and the Indo-Pacific region. He also mentioned the recently announced Joint Strategic Action Plan that will guide their collaborative efforts and expressed anticipation for Tajani’s visit to India in 2025.
In another post, Jaishankar highlighted his participation in the G7 FMM Outreach Session focused on Indo-Pacific partners, thanking Tajani for the warm welcome. He noted the significant changes in the Indo-Pacific, including new partnerships and emerging challenges. Both ministers emphasized the need for six key responses in the region: enhanced collaboration in maritime and supply chains, increased resources to support projects and prevent unsustainable debt, improved capacities in governance and disaster resilience, better interoperability for global cooperation, respect for international law, and providing policymakers with more options.
Jaishankar asserted that the Indo-Pacific requires practical solutions and agile diplomacy, suggesting the G7 could serve as a valuable partner in these efforts. In addition to discussions with Tajani, Jaishankar also held important talks with the foreign ministers of the US, South Korea, and Japan. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken highlighted their meeting, emphasizing the strength of the US-India partnership in promoting global security and prosperity. Jaishankar also appreciated the growing collaboration with South Korea and discussed advancing strategic ties with Japan. Earlier this year, Prime Minister Modi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni met during the G20 Summit in Brazil, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh engaged with counterparts from Japan, South Korea, and the US at the ASEAN Defence Minister’s Meeting Plus.
