Fresh violence erupts in Bangladesh, 97 killed while 500 injured; curfew imposed

Dhaka: The movement that started in Bangladesh against reservation has become more violent. On Sunday, thousands of protesters took to the streets demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. During this, violent clashes took place between them and the police at many places resulting in death of many people.

According to news agency PTI, 97 people have died on Sunday. Along with this, more than 500 people are reported to be injured. The government has imposed a curfew across the country to control the violence. Also, a public holiday has been announced for the next 3 days. The protesters have planned a ‘long march’ to Dhaka today.

Protestors have appealed to the general public to join the long march to Dhaka on Monday. Along with this, all the courts across the country have been closed indefinitely. The Supreme Court order states that only very important cases will be heard during the shutdown. For this, the Chief Justice will form an emergency bench.

Apart from this, the agitators killed 6 workers of PM Hasina’s party Awami League by mob lynching in Narsingdi district. According to reports, the protesters took out a procession in the afternoon which angered the Awami League workers.They fired at the protesters, in which 4 people were injured. Angered by this, the protesters retaliated. Awami League workers hid in a mosque out of fear, from where they were dragged out and beaten up, in which 6 workers were killed.
