Israel Iran War: Iran launched a major airstrike on Israel

On Tuesday night, Iran launched almost 181 ballistic missiles at Israel, triggering air raid sirens across the country and forcing nearly 10 million Israelis to seek shelter. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that many of the missiles were intercepted by advanced defense systems, such as the Iron Dome and Arrow. However, a few missiles got through, causing minor damage and some injuries.

Immediate Reaction
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the assault, declaring that Iran had made a “big mistake” and warning that Tehran “will pay for it.”

This missile attack marks Iran’s second direct strike on Israel this year, following a similar incident in April that was quickly thwarted by Israeli and allied defenses. Iranian officials claimed that the Tuesday strikes were in retaliation for the recent killings of senior Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh during Israeli military operations.

US Warning of Serious Repercussions
In reaction to the missile strike, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan issued a strong warning to Iran, stating that the attack represented a “significant escalation” and that there would be “severe consequences.” During a White House briefing, Sullivan affirmed the US’s commitment to Israel and its support for any retaliatory actions.

US President Joe Biden echoed this support, stating his full backing for Israel and revealing that military discussions were in progress to determine an appropriate response. Biden assured that the US military would assist in Israel’s defense and help intercept any further Iranian missile attacks. When asked about the extent of US involvement, Biden noted that discussions on a coordinated response were “active” and “ongoing.”
