Mexico: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum strongly opposed the recent construction of a new section of the US-Mexico border wall in New Mexico, describing it as a unilateral decision by the US government.
During her daily press briefing, Sheinbaum clarified that Mexico is not involved in or funding the project.
She stated, “They’re building it on their own. We don’t support the wall. We’ve established a secure border through cooperation and coordination, not barriers.”
She emphasized that the decision was made solely by US President Donald Trump and reiterated Mexico’s preference for development-focused collaboration and respect for its citizens residing in the United States.
Recently, the Trump administration began building a new segment of the border barrier between Santa Teresa, New Mexico, and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, which includes nearly 10 kilometers of steel posts behind an older fence.
Meanwhile, President Trump has imposed a 17 percent tariff on fresh tomatoes imported from Mexico and announced plans to implement a 30 percent tariff on goods from Mexico and the European Union starting August 1.
These tariffs target two of the US’s key trading partners. Trump also communicated these tariffs through separate letters to Mexican President Sheinbaum and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, citing concerns over fentanyl smuggling across the southern border, a key reason for the earlier 25 percent tariff on Mexican goods imposed earlier this year.
