Nepal Reports First Covid-19 Death Linked to Omicron Sub-Variants

Kathmandu: Nepal has recorded its first death from the new Omicron sub-variants of Covid-19, marking the first Covid-related fatality in over two years. The death was confirmed in Biratnagar, where a 39-year-old woman admitted to Nobel Medical College and Teaching Hospital died early Tuesday morning.

The woman was brought to the hospital at 4:20 a.m. and passed away at 6 a.m., according to hospital officials. Nepali health authorities, including the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division, are aware of the incident and are coordinating with provincial health officials to assess the situation.

Recent Covid Data and Variant Outbreaks
In the past 24 hours, eight new Covid cases were reported, and over the last week, more than 25 infections have been detected across 25 districts, totaling 180 cases since January. The health ministry confirmed a spread of multiple Omicron subvariants, with whole-genome sequencing revealing all 14 recent samples were infected with Omicron sub-variants.

Current Situation and Preparedness
Nepal has seen a rise in Covid cases, especially in Bagmati Province, which recorded 129 cases, followed by Sudurpaschim with 17, Madhes with 5, and other districts with fewer cases. To combat the spread, over 150 health workers have undergone field epidemiology training to strengthen surveillance. The government is actively mobilizing trained professionals to respond to potential outbreaks.
