Palestinian militant killed in clash with security forces in West Bank

Ramallah: In a recent encounter in the Jenin refugee camp in northern West Bank, one Palestinian militant was killed, and several others sustained injuries during clashes between Palestinian security forces and armed factions, according to a Palestinian medical source.

The incident occurred after Palestinian security forces surrounded the camp on Saturday, following an event on December 5 when militants connected to the “Jenin Brigade” of the Islamic Jihad Movement and other groups hijacked two vehicles belonging to the Palestinian Authority. The medical source, who wished to remain anonymous, reported that during the confrontation, one militant was fatally shot by security fire, while several militants were wounded. Additionally, five members of the security forces were also injured.

Anwar Rajab, spokesperson for the Palestinian security forces, confirmed that the operation in Jenin was initiated to restore public security. He explained that the campaign aims to reclaim the camp from lawbreakers who have disrupted everyday life and hindered citizens’ access to essential services.

The Hamas militant group, currently in conflict with Israeli forces in Gaza, condemned the actions of the Palestinian Authority (PA) regarding the Jenin operation. Meanwhile, Islamic Jihad has called for a day of protests in retaliation. The medical source stated that the body of the deceased militant was taken to Ibn Sina hospital in Jenin on Saturday, along with several injured individuals, both militants and PA personnel.

Hamas identified the deceased as Yazid Jaaysa, referring to him as a “resistance fighter.” Over recent years, Jenin has witnessed significant conflict between Palestinian militant groups and the Israeli military, especially following a series of Palestinian street attacks that began in March 2022. Tensions rose in Jenin after the December 5 incident, which involved armed individuals displaying Islamic Jihad flags with the stolen PA vehicles.

The Palestinian Authority has partial control in the West Bank, which has been under Israeli military occupation since 1967.
