At the same time, the Papua New Guinea Post Courier quoted the country’s Member of Parliament Amos Akem as saying that more than 300 people and 1,182 people were buried under the debris due to the landslide.

According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, four bodies have also been removed from the area with the help of emergency teams. The highway is blocked due to landslides, so helicopters are the only means of transportation.

The villagers are frantically searching for survivors. Villagers can be seen climbing rocks, uprooted trees and mud mounds.

Prime Minister James Marape has also expressed his views on this incident. He said that disaster officials and defense forces have started efforts to provide assistance to rural residents.
