New York: A tragic incident occurred on Sapelo Island, Georgia, where at least seven individuals lost their lives due to the partial collapse of a ferry dock, as reported by local media.
The dock’s gangway fell after being struck by a boat on Saturday, sending people who had gathered for a celebration into the water, according to Xinhua news agency.
Several others were transported to hospitals, and rescue efforts are ongoing as authorities search for any remaining survivors, stated Tyler Jones, spokesperson for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp expressed his sorrow over the incident in a post on the social media platform X, stating that he and his family were “heartbroken by today’s tragedy on Sapelo Island.” He urged all Georgians to pray for those who were lost, those still in danger, and their families, as state and local first responders continue to manage the active scene.
Rep. Buddy Carter of Georgia also shared his condolences on X, mentioning that Governor Kemp has dispatched state resources to assist in search, rescue, and recovery efforts. He thanked everyone who has stepped up in response to this heartbreaking loss.
Sapelo Island, located in McIntosh County, Georgia, is a protected barrier island that can only be reached by boat.
