Seoul: A South Korean delegation is scheduled to visit the Czech Republic on Tuesday to participate in the signing of a major multibillion-dollar nuclear power project and to discuss strengthening bilateral economic ties, according to Seoul’s industry ministry.

The group, consisting of government officials and parliamentarians, will spend two days in Prague, attending the signing ceremony on Wednesday. They will also meet with the Czech prime minister and the Senate president to explore further cooperation in nuclear energy, advanced industries, and infrastructure, reported Yonhap.

The South Korean representatives include Industry Minister Ahn Duk-geun, Land Minister Park Sang-woo, and Rep. Lee Chul-gyu, chair of the parliamentary industry committee.

A consortium led by Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. (KHNP) will finalize an agreement with Elektrarna Dukovany II. The project involves constructing two new nuclear units at the Dukovany plant, located about 200 kilometers south of Prague.

Valued at approximately 26 trillion won (about US$18.8 billion), this deal marks South Korea’s first overseas nuclear project since KHNP’s successful bid in the UAE’s Barakah plant in 2009. South Korea was named the preferred bidder for the Czech project in July 2024.
