Syria welcomes US president's remarks on potential sanctions relief

Damascus: Syria’s foreign officials expressed support for US President Donald Trump’s recent remarks regarding the potential lifting of sanctions on Damascus, describing it as a positive move toward easing the hardships faced by the Syrian population.

In a statement, Syrian authorities noted that the sanctions, initially imposed on the former Syrian government, continue to have a direct impact on the people and hinder efforts for post-conflict recovery and rebuilding. They emphasized that the Syrian people seek a complete removal of these restrictions, viewing it as a step towards promoting peace, prosperity, and regional stability through broader international cooperation.

Trump stated on Monday that he might relax US sanctions on Syria to give the country a “fresh start,” according to Xinhua news agency. His comments came in response to a question from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan about the sanctions.

This statement coincides with efforts by Syria’s new leadership to garner international support amid ongoing economic and security challenges following over a decade of conflict.

Earlier in April 2025, Syria welcomed Britain’s decision to lift sanctions on 12 Syrian entities in key sectors, viewing it as part of a wider process to revise its sanctions regime. The Syrian Foreign Ministry described Britain’s move as a positive signal for reconstruction efforts and a step toward normalizing international relations, helping address urgent needs after years of war.
