US senators call out China for 'weaponising' UN 1971 resolution, vow support to Taiwan

Taipei: US senators have criticized China for manipulating United Nations Resolution 2758 to isolate Taiwan and have introduced a resolution reaffirming US support for the island. The senators argue that China has “weaponised” the 1971 resolution, which transferred China’s UN seat from Taiwan to the People’s Republic of China, to distort historical facts and undermine Taiwan’s participation in international organizations.

Senators Jim Risch and Jeanne Shaheen, along with Pete Ricketts and Chris Coons, introduced a bipartisan resolution opposing China’s campaign to pressure the US and other nations into recognizing its sovereignty claim over Taiwan. Senator Risch emphasized that the US does not acknowledge China’s claim over Taiwan and condemned Beijing’s attempts to manipulate the UN for its own interests. Senator Shaheen noted that these tactics threaten international support for Taiwan, while Senator Ricketts highlighted that China’s “One China principle” aims to isolate and coerce Taiwan.

The resolution aims to counter China’s narrative that UNGA Resolution 2758 grants it sovereignty over Taiwan, clarifying that the US’s “one China policy” differs from the Chinese Communist Party’s stance. It also opposes China’s efforts to limit Taiwan’s meaningful participation in global organizations. Taiwan’s Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim expressed gratitude for the senators’ support on social media, acknowledging their stand against China’s tactics in the international arena.
