SYDNEY (Dec 15, 2025) — A deadly mass shooting at Bondi Beach in Sydney has shown potential Islamic State hallmarks, as investigators examine evidence from the scene and the background of one of the attackers.
Deadly Attack at Hanukkah Celebration
On Sunday evening, December 14, two gunmen opened fire on crowds celebrating the first day of Hanukkah at Bondi Beach, killing at least 16 people and injuring more than 40 others. Australian authorities have officially declared the incident a terrorist attack targeted at Sydney’s Jewish community.
Suspects Identified and ISIS Connections Under Investigation
Police have identified the shooters as 50-year-old Sajid Akram and his 24-year-old son Naveed Akram. The younger man, Naveed, was critically injured and taken into custody, while Sajid was killed by police at the scene.
Sources say Islamic State flags were found in the attackers’ vehicle, and expert analysts believe the planning and execution display characteristics associated with Islamist extremist tactics, though official confirmation of IS operational involvement is still under investigation.
The Australian Security Intelligence Organization (ASIO) reportedly examined Naveed Akram in 2019 for potential ties to an Islamic State cell, but he was not assessed as posing an immediate threat at the time.
Improvised Explosives and Wider Threat Assessment
Authorities also discovered an improvised explosive device (IED) in a vehicle linked to one of the attackers. New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon confirmed that sophisticated planning appears to have been involved in the assault.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the massacre as a deliberate act of hate, emphasizing that it struck during a time of peaceful celebration and called it “pure evil” and “a targeted attack against the Jewish community.”
Heroic Civilian Intervention and Community Response
Amid the chaos, a bystander identified in media reports as Ahmed al Ahmed courageously tackled and disarmed one of the gunmen, actions credited with saving lives before he was hospitalized with injuries.
Islamic and Jewish community leaders alike have condemned the attack. The Alice Springs Islamic Mosque described the violence as completely contrary to Islamic teachings and called for unity and peace.
International and National Reactions
The shooting has prompted global condemnation, with world leaders expressing solidarity with Australia’s Jewish community and calling for stronger counter-terrorism measures. Vigils and increased security at Jewish events have been reported internationally.
Australian officials are reviewing gun licensing laws and counter-terrorism protocols in the aftermath of one of the deadliest mass shootings in the nation’s history.
