Jaipur: A 19-year-old college student allegedly died by suicide in Jaipur on Saturday evening after returning from the funeral of a close friend who had died in a road accident a day earlier, police said.
The student, who was pursuing a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree, was living in a rented room at a guest house in the Jawahar Nagar area. She was found hanging with a scarf (chunni) in her room. Police have sent the body for post-mortem examination and launched an investigation.
Friend Found Her Hanging
According to Jawahar Nagar SHO Sarla Yadav, the incident came to light around 7:30 p.m. when a female friend, who lived nearby, went to meet the student.
After finding the room locked, she used the digital lock password, which she knew as they were friends, and found the student hanging inside. Police and an FSL team reached the spot, collected evidence and shifted the body to SMS Hospital mortuary.
Distressed After Friend’s Fatal Accident
During questioning, the student’s friend told police that the deceased had shifted to the guest house about a month ago after previously staying in a hostel. The two had become friends only around ten days earlier.
She said the student was deeply distressed over the death of a 20-year-old male friend from Shahpura, Jaipur Rural, who was killed in a road accident on Friday night. The student had accompanied others to his village to attend the funeral and had been crying continuously after returning.
According to the friend, she briefly stepped out to bring a pet dog in an attempt to cheer her up. When she returned a short while later, she found the student hanging in the room.
Friend Died in Thar Accident
Police said the deceased student’s friend was travelling to Jaipur in a Thar SUV with another person when the vehicle allegedly hit a divider in the Hasanpura area due to overspeeding.
Despite the airbags deploying, the 20-year-old died in the crash, while the other occupant sustained injuries and was admitted to hospital. The Sadar Police registered an FIR in connection with the accident, seized the damaged vehicle and are investigating the case.
Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the student’s death
