New Delhi: Protesting students at Jamia Millia Islamia have made it clear that they will continue their hunger strike and peaceful protests until their demands are met. Submitting a formal letter of their demands to the Vice-Chancellor, the students demanded that the Registrar’s Office amend the notification regarding the hunger strike and that all their demands be fully implemented.

On Monday, the Jamia administration accepted the demands of the protesting students, announcing the formation of a committee to conduct student union elections and draft a student union constitution. The administration also announced the withdrawal of the action taken against the protesting students. However, no specific timeframe was given for this entire process.

In the letter to the Vice-Chancellor, the students stated that the hunger strike and peaceful protests will continue until their demands are met.

The students’ key demands include setting a clear timeline for approving the student union constitution and holding elections, withdrawing disciplinary action against protesters, and resigning the Chief Security Advisor.

The students stated in their letter, “No protesting student will apologize for exercising their constitutional right to peacefully protest.”

They stated that the hunger strike and peaceful protests will continue until their demands are met. The students appealed to the university administration to seriously consider their demands and ensure the formation of the student union within the stipulated timeframe.

The letter stated that the students expect clear assurances from the administration so that a democratically elected student union can be formed.

Students not satisfied with the administration’s order

Earlier on Monday, the students issued a statement rejecting the university administration’s notice. They stated that the notice did not show a clear and concrete commitment to the restoration of the student union. The students reiterated that the protest will continue until all their demands are met.

Students described the administration’s order as vague and inadequate, saying it neither provided a specific deadline for approving the student union’s constitution nor presented a clear plan for holding elections.

According to the students’ statement, the notice also makes no mention of the resignation of the proctor and security advisor, both of which are among the protesters’ key demands.

Elections to be held within 15 days of approval of the constitution

In an order issued on Monday, the university stated that elections would be held within 15 days of approval of the student union’s constitution. However, no timeframe was given for when the process of approving the constitution would be completed.

The students’ protest has been ongoing since October 12. They are demanding the reinstatement of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union (JMISU), which was dissolved in 2006.

Many students are on a hunger strike. Their demands include the reinstatement of the student union as well as the removal of the university’s chief proctor for alleged actions against protesters.
