Jantar Mantar Violence: Families of Injured Delhi Policemen Demand Justice

New Delhi: Families of Delhi Police personnel injured during the recent student protest at Jantar Mantar held a press conference on Friday to demand justice. The families allege that the suffering of the injured policemen and their families has been ignored amid allegations of police action against the students. They demanded strict action against those responsible for the attack.

‘My father was almost killed by the mob’

The daughter of an injured Delhi Police sub-inspector alleged that her father was attacked by a violent mob during a protest at Jantar Mantar on July 25. She said her father was dragged near the stage and an attempt was made to kill him. He was admitted to RML Hospital in critical condition, where he remained unconscious for about four hours.

She said her father served as a Marine Commando in the Indian Navy for 15 years and later joined the Delhi Police. The daughter said her father’s uniform was completely soaked in blood and he received four stitches on his head. Seeing him in that condition was extremely painful for the entire family.

ACP’s wife describes family’s pain

The wife of an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) who was injured during the protest said that the entire family was in shock when her husband returned home injured that night. He said that his two-year-old daughter was also affected by the incident, and even today, many police families have not been able to recover from the pain.

Demand for action against the attackers

The family of another injured police officer said that strict action should be taken against those who incited violence and that no culprits should be spared. They also said that students who have no connection to the violence should be released after their records are examined.

Protest ends after government assurance

The 36-day protest by the Cockroach Janta Party at Jantar Mantar ended after the government accepted key demands. These included the resignation of then-Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, the withdrawal of the FIRs filed, an assurance of no retaliatory action against protesters, and a promise to consider examination reforms.
