Wellington: Acclaimed New Zealand actor Sam Neill, who won global recognition for playing Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park franchise, has died at the age of 78. His family confirmed that he passed away in Sydney and described his death as “sudden and unexpected.” They also said Neill had remained cancer-free following his treatment for blood cancer.

The Face of ‘Jurassic Park’

Sam Neill became a household name in 1993 after starring as paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park, one of the most successful and influential films in cinema history. Directed by Steven Spielberg, the film revolutionised visual effects and became a global blockbuster, grossing over $1 billion worldwide through its original run and re-releases. It went on to spawn one of Hollywood’s biggest film franchises.

Neill reprised the beloved role in Jurassic Park III (2001) and returned alongside the original cast in Jurassic World Dominion (2022), delighting longtime fans of the series.

A Career Spanning More Than Five Decades

Beyond Jurassic Park, Neill built an acclaimed career across film and television spanning over 50 years. His notable performances included roles in The Piano, Dead Calm, The Hunt for Red October, The Omen III, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, and television series such as Peaky Blinders and The Tudors. His versatility earned him widespread critical acclaim and made him one of New Zealand’s most respected actors.

Born in Northern Ireland in 1947, Neill moved to New Zealand as a child and later became one of the country’s most celebrated screen stars. He was knighted in 2022 for his contributions to the performing arts.

Battle With Cancer

In 2023, Neill revealed that he had been diagnosed with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare form of blood cancer. Earlier this year, he announced that he was cancer-free after successful treatment. His family reiterated that he remained cancer-free until his death. No official cause of death has been disclosed.
