Chennai: In a blockbuster announcement that has sent waves of excitement through the Tamil film industry, Kamal Haasan revealed on Wednesday that his production banner, Raaj Kamal Films International (RKFI), will be producing Superstar Rajinikanth’s next film, tentatively titled #Thalaivar173.
The film will be directed by veteran filmmaker Sundar C, known for his successful commercial entertainers. Announcing the project on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Kamal Haasan also shared an emotional Tamil poem, which loosely translates to:
“As wind, as rain, as river, we will pour.
We will rejoice, we will live.”
A Cinematic Milestone Celebrating Friendship and Legacy
The official RKFI statement described the film as a “magnum opus” and a landmark collaboration that unites two of Indian cinema’s biggest forces — Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan — both of whom have been close friends and colleagues for over five decades.
“This landmark collaboration not only unites two towering forces of Indian cinema but also celebrates five decades of friendship and brotherhood between Superstar Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan — a bond that continues to inspire generations of artists and audiences alike,” the statement read.
The film also marks 44 years of Raaj Kamal Films International, Kamal Haasan’s banner known for producing some of Tamil cinema’s most acclaimed works.
Sundar C to Direct, Red Giant Movies to Distribute
Directed by Sundar C and envisioned by Kamal Haasan and R. Mahendran, #Thalaivar173 is slated for a grand theatrical release during Pongal 2027, with Red Giant Movies handling the distribution.
RKFI emphasized that the project would blend Rajinikanth’s magnetic screen presence with Sundar C’s dynamic storytelling, promising a cinematic spectacle for fans worldwide.
Kamal Haasan also shared a photograph of himself with Rajinikanth, marking the announcement — a visual celebration of their enduring friendship.
Rajinikanth’s 50 Years in Cinema
Earlier this year, Rajinikanth celebrated 50 glorious years in the entertainment industry. Kamal Haasan had congratulated his long-time friend with a heartfelt message on X:
“Marking half a century of cinematic brilliance, my dear friend @rajinikanth celebrates 50 glorious years in cinema today. I celebrate our Super Star with affection and admiration and wish #Coolie resounding global success befitting this golden jubilee.”
With #Thalaivar173, Tamil cinema’s two greatest icons are set to reunite in spirit, delivering what promises to be one of the most anticipated cinematic collaborations of the decade.
