Kochi: Kerala Blasters FC will look to bounce back from their heavy defeat in the previous match when they host Mumbai City FC in their first home game of the 2026-27 Indian Super League season on Sunday.
The match will take place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi, with kick-off scheduled for 7:30 PM IST. Kerala are coming into the contest after a 4-1 loss to NorthEast United FC, while Mumbai City are still searching for their first win after collecting just one point from their opening two matches.
Both teams will be keen to improve their results, but they face different challenges heading into the fixture.
Kerala Blasters Aim to Respond in Front of Home Fans
Kerala head coach Ashley Westwood admitted that defensive mistakes played a part in the defeat against NorthEast United. However, he also pointed to the limited time the squad had together during pre-season as the team continues to build combinations and settle on a regular starting eleven.
Westwood wants his players to maintain an attacking mindset rather than become overly cautious after the setback.
“We try and play intense, aggressive football. We try and get numbers forward. We try and win every game,” the Kerala coach said.
The home opener also gives the Blasters an opportunity to reconnect with their supporters and begin building momentum at their own ground.
Westwood acknowledged that a result cannot be guaranteed but said the team would give its best effort.
“You can’t guarantee a result, but we can guarantee we give everything we’ve got,” he said.
Kerala will hope that the support in Kochi helps them produce a stronger performance after conceding four goals in their previous outing.
Mumbai City Look to Improve Their Attack
Mumbai City FC have managed only one point from their first two matches, and their attacking output remains an area of concern. Both goals scored by the Islanders so far have come from penalties, leaving head coach Manolo Márquez looking for greater threat from open play.
“Obviously, we would like to create more chances,” Márquez said, acknowledging that his team needs to do better at getting into scoring positions during normal play.
Forward Farukh Choudhary also stressed the importance of making better use of opportunities in the final third.
“The chances we create in the game, I think, as attackers, not only me, whoever is playing, I think we need to be more clinical,” he said.
Mumbai City will also have to manage their squad carefully. Vikram Partap Singh is set to be out for an extended period, while Wilmar Jordan Gil is expected to miss several matches because of a hamstring injury.
Kochi Crowd Adds to the Challenge
The atmosphere at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium is expected to be another test for Mumbai City. Márquez acknowledged the prospect of playing in front of Kerala’s passionate supporters but said his side would need to remain focused on the match.
For Kerala, the priority will be to put the previous defeat behind them and give their home fans a performance to rally around. Mumbai City, meanwhile, need to turn their efforts into goals and secure their first victory of the campaign.
With both sides under pressure to improve, Sunday’s meeting could prove important in shaping their early-season momentum.
