Kolkata: A dispute over a love affair allegedly took a violent turn on the southern outskirts of Kolkata. It is alleged that the family of a young woman paraded the young man and his father, who were in a relationship with her, naked. The incident sparked tension and widespread public outrage.
The incident occurred in the Bashundhara Park area under the jurisdiction of the Sarsuna police station. Kolkata Police said on Monday that three people, including the woman’s father and uncle, have been arrested in connection with the case.
Dispute over love affair
According to reports, a young man from Sarsuna in the Behala area was in a love relationship with a young woman. It is reported that the woman’s family had been opposing the relationship from the beginning.
On Sunday, the woman’s relatives allegedly saw the two men in an objectionable position, leading to an argument that escalated into violence.
It is alleged that the young man’s father and uncle held him hostage inside the house and brutally assaulted him. The young man’s father was then called to the scene.
A gun was presented to the father in front of his son, and he was threatened with two options.
The incident took a more serious turn when the young man’s family allegedly presented a gun to the young man’s father in front of his son and asked him to shoot him.
According to the police, the family allegedly presented the young man with two options: face death or walk naked on the streets. Following this, the young man and his father were forced to walk naked in public.
It is reported that a friend of the young man was also assaulted and humiliated in a similar manner.
A senior Kolkata Police official said, “Based on the complaint from the young man’s family, three people have been arrested. A case has been registered against them under relevant sections. The accused will be produced in court today. The police will seek their custody for further questioning.”
Enraged after the incident, woman’s house vandalized
Local residents were shocked and angered by the incident. After news of the alleged assault and public humiliation spread, a mob gathered and vandalized the woman’s house.
Upon receiving information about the incident, Sarsuna police arrived at the scene. As tensions rose in the area, the woman’s father and other family members reportedly fled.
However, the mob caught hold of the woman’s uncle, assaulted him, and later handed him over to the police.
According to police sources, the woman’s father and another man were arrested late Sunday night. Following the incident, tensions prevailed in the area, prompting police to intensify efforts to control the situation.
Some local residents alleged that the woman’s family previously had close ties with local Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders. They claimed that this had led to the alleged arrogance of the family members. They demanded strict action and exemplary punishment against the accused in the case.
Social activist also questions eyewitnesses
Reacting to the incident, social activist Shaswati Ghosh questioned the behavior of those allegedly involved in the violence as well as those present at the scene.
She said, “Those who committed this act are mentally unstable. But did those who witnessed it enjoy it or protest against it? This should also be investigated.”
