The encounter took place in Jumgund, in the Keran sector, where troops launched an operation after spotting a suspected group near the border.
According to initial reports, three to four suspected terrorists were moving in the area when alert troops challenged them. An exchange of fire followed, prompting security forces to step up their search in the border region.
The incident is being reported as a suspected infiltration attempt. However, officials have not confirmed whether the group managed to cross the LoC. The circumstances surrounding the movement are still being established.
Troops Detect Movement in Jumgund
Jumgund lies in the Keran sector of Kupwara district, close to the Line of Control. Security forces keep watch along the border to detect suspected infiltration attempts, particularly when movement is noticed in sensitive areas.
In this case, troops acted after detecting suspicious activity during the early hours of Saturday. They challenged the suspected group, and firing broke out soon afterwards.
Initial information suggested that the group could have included three to four people. Two terrorists were reportedly killed in the encounter, but details about their identities had not been released in the information available so far.
It also remained unclear whether all members of the suspected group had been accounted for. Security forces continued checking the area to establish what happened and whether any suspects remained nearby.
Search Operation Underway
Following the exchange of fire, security forces launched a search and combing operation in the area. Personnel were looking for any remaining suspects and working to establish the sequence of events.
The terrain around the LoC in this part of north Kashmir is mountainous and remote, which can make operations and the collection of information from the ground more difficult. Security personnel are continuing their search as further details are awaited.
There was no immediate confirmation of any recoveries during the operation. The identities of the two terrorists reportedly killed also remained unknown.
An official statement from the Indian Army was awaited. Until further details are released, the suspected infiltration attempt and the circumstances of the encounter remain subject to confirmation.
