33 TN fishermen arrested by Sri Lankan Navy, three boats seized

Chennai: The Sri Lankan Navy has apprehended 33 fishermen from Tamil Nadu for allegedly breaching the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL). Officials reported that three valuable mechanized boats were also confiscated during the arrests, which took place in the early hours of Sunday (January 26) and involved fishermen from Rameswaram.

Authorities from Tamil Nadu’s Coastal Police stated that this incident has raised significant concerns regarding the safety and livelihoods of local fishermen. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had previously written to Union External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on January 12, requesting immediate diplomatic efforts to secure the release of the detained fishermen.

In his letter, CM Stalin expressed serious concern over the frequent arrests, which have instilled fear and uncertainty within the fishing communities of Tamil Nadu. He emphasized that these ongoing arrests have led to considerable economic difficulties and jeopardized the traditional livelihoods of fishermen, urging prompt action for the release of both the fishermen and their seized boats.

Fishermen’s associations throughout Tamil Nadu have condemned these arrests and called for urgent government intervention. Antony John, a fishermen’s leader from Rameswaram, criticized the Union government for not adequately addressing this ongoing issue, stating that it has become increasingly unsafe to fish in the Palk Bay. He noted that around 270 trawlers have been impounded since 2018, leaving many fishermen unemployed and in debt.

Rajagopal C.M., another leader from Thangachimadam, voiced similar concerns, accusing both the Union and State governments of neglecting the needs of the fisherfolk. Reports indicate that since June 16, 2024, the Sri Lankan Navy has arrested 425 fishermen from Tamil Nadu and seized 58 boats, with many of those detained still in Sri Lankan jails. This situation has led to widespread protests and calls for government action.

This latest incident highlights the pressing need for a coordinated diplomatic strategy to address the ongoing arrests and protect the livelihoods of Tamil Nadu’s fishing communities.
