40 held in connection with Parbhani violence; MVA slams sacrilege to Ambedkar statue

Parbhani (Maharashtra): The recent violence in Parbhani, Maharashtra, has sparked significant unrest following the desecration of a statue of B. R. Ambedkar, a revered figure in Indian history and the architect of the Constitution. At least 40 individuals have been detained in connection with the mob violence, which included arson, stone-pelting, and vandalism during a local shutdown called by Dalit organizations in response to the incident.

The violence erupted after unknown individuals damaged a replica of the Constitution at the statue’s site, leading to widespread protests. Local Dalit groups responded by organizing a bandh, which saw a strong turnout, resulting in many shops and schools closing for the day. Protesters expressed their anger by vandalizing vehicles and burning tires, prompting police to deploy additional security forces and use measures like mild caning and teargas to control the situation.

Prominent leaders from the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) and the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) have condemned the vandalism, calling it a shameful act and criticizing the police for their delayed response. VBA chief Prakash Ambedkar has demanded immediate action against those responsible, threatening further protests if the situation is not addressed promptly.

The authorities have taken precautionary measures, including cutting off internet access in the area to prevent the spread of rumors and unrest. Security has been heightened in Parbhani and surrounding districts to maintain order as tensions rise ahead of the upcoming Winter Session of the Legislature.

This incident underscores ongoing societal tensions and the sensitivity surrounding symbols of Dalit identity, with leaders emphasizing the need for unity and calm among the community.
