Abhay Deol reveals struggle with fame before Dev D release

Mumbai: Actor Abhay Deol has opened up about his difficult journey with fame before the release of his breakthrough film Dev D in 2009. In a recent interview with Humans of Bombay, Abhay shared that the overwhelming attention made him uncomfortable, prompting him to move to New York. He recalled how the sudden limelight reminded him of his childhood, where he disliked being the centre of attention despite his love for creativity and acting.

Abhay admitted that he anticipated Dev D would be a major success but was conflicted about becoming famous. He revealed that unresolved personal issues and fear of fame pushed him to escape. “I wanted to act but didn’t want to be famous. There was a conflict within me, so I just ran away,” he said.

During his time in New York, the actor described his phase as self-destructive, mirroring his role in Dev D. He indulged in alcohol, avoided work, and mismanaged his money. “It was a temporary escape. I knew I wouldn’t stay there forever, but I was just playing the part I portrayed in Dev D,” he shared.

Despite calling that phase destructive, Abhay believes it was a valuable learning experience. He eventually returned to continue his acting career and support his family. The actor later went on to star in popular films like Zindagi Na Milegi DobaraAisha, and Shanghai, earning praise for his unconventional film choices.
