Akal Takht Jathedar calls for peace amid Indo-Pak tensions; Reaffirms Punjab’s right over river waters

Amritsar, May 2: Jathedar of Akal Takht Sahib Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj today expressed concern over the current tension between India and Pakistan in Amritsar. He said that war is not the solution to any problem between India and Pakistan, and the message of peace, love and brotherhood should always be given.

Expressing concern over the situation of families stranded at the Attari-Wagah border, the Jathedar said, “Mothers are crying for their children and children are crying for their mothers at the border.” Human organs and blood are all the same, so we should not move towards destruction like war. Wars have not solved any problem to date; they have been fatal for humanity, animals and the environment.

Jathedar Gargaj also drew attention to the Pakistani citizens who had come to India for treatment and are now stranded. He appealed to the Indian government to take an appropriate decision by understanding the humanitarian aspect of these patients.

Talk of rights over Punjab’s water

The Jathedar said that the rivers of Punjab flow in Punjab, so Punjab has the first right on water. This is not a question of drinking water, but of saving Punjab from becoming barren. Haryana can be given water only when Punjab has enough left.

He alleged that when water was released from Punjab, many parts of the state got submerged, yet the people of Punjab are not getting their share of water.

Religious and constitutional basis

Jathedar Gargaj said that “It is clear in Guru Sahib’s words that everyone is equal, humans are of one caste. Humanity is above country and religion.” He also said that the Constitution also says that the states in which rivers flow have the first right on water.
