Dhaka: November proved to be another deadly month for dengue in Bangladesh, with nearly 30,000 new cases and 173 fatalities reported. According to data from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), a total of 29,652 cases were recorded in November alone.
As of Sunday morning, an additional 882 cases were reported in the previous 24 hours, bringing the total number of dengue cases in Bangladesh for the year to 92,351. The death toll has now reached 494, with six new dengue-related deaths reported in the last day.
This year, Bangladesh has experienced its highest annual death toll from dengue, with 1,705 fatalities recorded in 2023. In comparison, there were 281 deaths in 2022 and 179 in 2019.
Dengue fever, which is transmitted by infected Aedes mosquitoes, leads to severe symptoms including headaches, high fever, fatigue, intense muscle and joint pain, swollen glands, vomiting, and skin rashes. To combat the surge in cases, health authorities in Bangladesh are intensifying efforts to eliminate mosquito breeding sites and conduct anti-larval operations.
