Bengal: Senior resident doctor accused of rape, attempt to murder absconding

Kolkata: A senior resident doctor at Murshidabad Medical College & Hospital in West Bengal has gone into hiding after being accused of rape and attempted murder. A formal complaint was filed against him this week at the Baharampur Police Station, prompting an investigation by local authorities.

According to a senior police official, the doctor is facing charges under multiple sections, including rape, and his statement has been recorded. Police are currently conducting search operations to locate him.

The victim, who had known the doctor for some time, alleged that he invited her to meet him in Baharampur on October 8 under the pretense of discussing a marriage proposal. During their meeting, he reportedly took her to a hotel room, where he allegedly mixed sedatives into her drink. After she became unconscious, he is accused of raping her.

On December 2, the doctor allegedly contacted her again to discuss the situation. During this encounter, he threatened her to keep quiet about the October incident and attempted to strangle her when she refused. The victim managed to escape and later decided to file a complaint with the police.

Sources indicate that the complainant, a resident of Kolkata, was also asked to come to Baharampur for medical examinations but has not yet done so. This incident adds to a troubling trend in West Bengal, which has recently seen a rise in high-profile cases of rape and murder, including the tragic case of a junior doctor who was raped and killed in a hospital in Kolkata last August.
