Delhi Court grants 7-days interim bail to Umar Khalid in UAPA charges to attend family function

Delhi: The Delhi court on Wednesday granted a seven-day interim bail to a former JNU scholar booked under the charges of UAPA case alleging a larger conspiracy related to the 2020 North-East Delhi riots.

Khalid was granted bail by additional session judge Sameer Bajpai of Karkardooma for attending a wedding in the family.

The court has also directed Khalid not to contact any person or witness of the incident in connection with his case during his interim bail outside. He has also been directed not to use any social media during these seven days.

Khalid had earlier applied for a bail in October 2022 which was denied by Delhi high court. He later approached Supreme courts where he later withdrew his SLP.

He later applied for a bail earlier this year which was also denied by the court.

Khalid now has to surrender himself in the evening of the 03- January in front of the Superintendent of concerned jail authorities.

Courts have also directed Umar to remain at the home or present at the places where functions take place.

Khalid was arrested by Delhi police on 14-September-2020 for his alleged role in the riots that left 53 people, mostly muslims, dead. The police later arrested around 2500 people in the case among which around 2000 people have been granted a bail b y court in the last four years.
