Chandigarh: During the executive meeting of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, the SGPC Interim Committee has removed Giani Raghbir Singh, Jathedar of Akal Takht Sahib, and Giani Sultan Singh, Jathedar of Kesgarh Sahib, from their positions. However, Giani Raghubir Singh will continue to serve as the head Granthi of Sri Harmandir Sahib. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee has not yet taken any decision on the resignation of Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, who resigned from the post of President of the SGPC.
“Kuldeep Singh Gargaj is appointed Jathedar of Takht Kesgarh Sahib with officiating charge as Akal Takht Jathedar. SGPC member Tek Singh Dhanaula will serve as Takht Damdama Sahib’s Jathedar,” an SGPC spokesperson told the media.
Harjinder Singh Dhami resigned from the post of SGPC President on 17 February. Dhami’s resignation has not yet been accepted by the Executive Committee. The SGPC Executive had said that Harjinder Singh Dhami should reconsider his resignation. The Executive had requested him to continue as SGPC President, but on Thursday Harjinder Singh Dhami has clearly said that he will not withdraw his resignation.
The resignation has not been accepted by the SGPC Executive even after 20 days. Many senior leaders of Akali Dal Badal, many leaders of the rebel faction and former Jathedar of Takht Damdama Sahib Giani Harpreet Singh and even Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib Giani Raghbir Singh have appealed to Dhami to withdraw his resignation.
The choice made by SGPC has incited a cascade of reactions by various people making their opinions clear about the scenario. The public waits for future updates as SGPC works around this major switch in leadership.
