Girish Malik expresses pride as his film ‘Band of Maharajas’ enters the race for Oscars

Mumbai: In a notable milestone for Indian cinema, Girish Malik’s musical film “Band of Maharajas” has been deemed eligible for the Oscars in two significant categories.

The film’s impactful song “Ishq Walla Daku” and its enchanting original score, composed by the eminent Bickram Ghosh, are now contenders for Best Original Song and Best Original Score. This achievement underscores the successful collaboration between Malik and Ghosh, who previously received Oscar attention for their 2014 film “Jal.” Their new project has garnered international acclaim.

Director Girish Malik expressed his excitement, stating, “We are thrilled that Band of Maharajas is now in the running for an Oscar nomination. This film is more than just a story; it serves as a heartfelt homage to the ability of music to transcend boundaries and unite people.” Bickram Ghosh remarked, “Band of Maharajas is a labor of love, and we are thankful for the support and recognition it has received.”

The film narrates the inspiring tale of three young musicians from a small village in Punjab, who, propelled by their love for music, venture into Pakistan—a nation where music often faces opposition from extremist groups. It chronicles their journey of resilience, courage, and the unifying force of art.

As the only Hindi film vying for an Oscar this year, “Band of Maharajas” showcases Indian cinema on the world stage.

While Kiran Rao’s “Laapataa Ladies” has been selected as India’s official entry for the 2025 Oscars, both Iman Chakraborty’s song “Iti Maa” and Bickram Ghosh’s “Ishq Walla Daku” are being considered for the Best Original Song category.

There’s a recent legacy of success for Indian films at the Oscars, with “RRR” song “Naatu Naatu” making history by being the first Indian feature to win the Best Original Song Award at the 95th Academy Awards.
