Shimla: Himachal Pradesh University has made a significant decision aimed at addressing the issues faced by PhD students. From now on, there will be two course work exams for PhDs each year, to be held in December and June. With this decision, students will no longer have to wait a whole year for their course work exams. Currently, the university conducts exams in March and April.
The university admits PhD students twice a year, with admissions based on an entrance exam and a direct admission arrangement for candidates who qualify in national-level scholarships like JRF, among others. Between 200 to 250 students gain admission to various PhD courses offered by the university each year. With the decision to conduct PhD admissions two times a year, the university will also carry out course work exams twice.
The university’s examination controller, Prof. Shyam Lal Kaushal, acknowledged that the decision to hold course work exams for PhD candidates in June and December will benefit students by allowing them to take the exams without waiting an entire year. This will help them manage their research work more effectively and complete it on time.
Himachal Pradesh University has decided to implement this change starting in December 2024. The examination controller has already released the schedule for the December examinations for all PhD course works, and it has been uploaded to the university’s website. The PhD course work exams in scientific subjects will begin on December 24. The detailed schedule for these exams has been made available on the university’s website, and the HP University Business School has been designated as the examination center.
