If you can't fulfil duties as LG, step aside: CM Atishi to VK Saxena on toxins in Yamuna

New Delhi: On January 29, 2025, Delhi Chief Minister Atishi criticized Lieutenant-Governor V. K. Saxena in a letter, accusing him of spreading a “false narrative” regarding pollutants in the Yamuna River. She suggested that if Saxena was “incapable” of fulfilling his duties, he should step aside for someone who would prioritize the welfare of Delhi residents.

Atishi’s remarks followed Saxena’s communication expressing concern over AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal’s statement that the Haryana government was “poisoning” the Yamuna. Saxena advised Atishi to “rise above narrow politics” and condemned her lack of condemnation for comments that could create tension between neighboring states.

In her letter, ATishi pointedly addressed the critical issue of high ammonia levels in Delhi’s water supply, accusing Saxena of deflecting responsibility with baseless claims. She urged him to reject the influence of the BJP and prioritize public health over political interests.

Atishi condemned Saxena for not taking adequate measures to address the water quality crisis, emphasizing that the dangerous ammonia levels pose serious health risks. The controversy escalated after AAP accused the BJP-led Haryana government of deliberately releasing untreated water into the Yamuna, jeopardizing Delhi’s water supply. In response, Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini threatened defamation, claiming the accusations were unfounded.

Additionally, Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit questioned why Haryana Police had not taken action against AAP leaders for what he labeled as blatant falsehoods.
