India welcomes Israel, Lebanon's ceasefire decision

New Delhi: India has expressed its support for the recent ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon, with the Ministry of External Affairs highlighting that this decision aligns with India’s call for de-escalation in the region. The statement emphasized India’s longstanding advocacy for restraint and a return to dialogue and diplomacy, hoping that these developments will promote peace and stability throughout the region.

Earlier that day, US President Joe Biden announced that he had spoken with the Prime Ministers of Lebanon and Israel, who agreed to the US proposal aimed at ending the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Biden shared, “Today, I have good news to report from the Middle East. I have spoken to the Prime Ministers of Lebanon and Israel, and I am pleased to announce: They have accepted the United States’ proposal to end the devastating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.”

Supporting Biden’s announcement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed gratitude to the US President for facilitating the ceasefire and acknowledged that Israel would retain its freedom to act in enforcing the agreement.

On November 2, amid rising tensions in West Asia, the Ministry of External Affairs had stated that the Indian Embassy in Israel was maintaining communication with Indian nationals in the region. They noted that approximately 20,000 to 30,000 people of Indian origin reside in Israel and that the embassy had issued travel advisories to ensure their safety. The MEA reiterated its call for a return to dialogue and diplomacy.
