Indian Railways to install AI-powered CCTV cameras in 74,000 coaches and 15,000 engines

New Delhi, July 14: Indian Railways has announced to install hi-tech CCTV cameras in all 74,000 train coaches and 15,000 locomotives (electric engines) across the country.

In view of the safety of the passengers, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has approved this project in the meeting held on 12th July.

This project has been trialled in Northern Railway. After the response received from passengers and railway staff, it is being implemented across the country.

Railways will install 4 dome type CCTV cameras in every coach. There will be two cameras on every gate of the coach. Apart from this, 6 CCTV cameras will be installed in every engine. Their position will be in the front, rear and both sides of the engine.

Latest technology cameras will be used for quality footage

One dome camera and two desk mounted microphones will also be installed in each cabin (front and rear) of the loco in the engine.

These cameras will be STQC (Standardization Testing and Quality) certified and will be equipped with the latest technology to ensure high quality footage even at speeds of over 100 kmph and in low light.

Cameras will be installed only in common areas

Keeping in mind the privacy of passengers, the railways will install cameras only in common areas near the doors. Apart from this, officials have also been instructed that there should be no compromise on the quality of CCTV footage and data security.

AI will be used in CCTV data

Railways, in collaboration with India AI Mission, will also use AI on CCTV data, which will make it easier to identify suspicious activities.

With this, strict vigil can now be kept on theft, molestation, looting and activities of anti-social elements in trains. Strict action will now be possible against those who damage railway property.
