Punjab: Farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal on Friday breaks fast after the last batch of farmers detained by police has been released from jails, sources said.
Reports reaching said that Dallewal has broken his fast and accepted water this afternoon after farmers were released by the authorities.
Pertinent to mention Dallewal was on fast since November 26 at the Shambhu border with hundreds of farmers.
The protesting farmers were demanding a legal framework for MSP across all crops and the implementation of the Swaminathan Commission’s recommendations, farmers began their march from various locations in Punjab. They were halted at border points on February 13, 2024, and had been camping there since. Violence erupted on February 21, 2024, at both protest sites when farmers attempted to breach barricades to proceed towards Delhi.
The clashes led to injuries among security personnel and protesters at the Khanauri border, where 21-year-old protester Shubh Karan Singh lost his life.
The Supreme Court had previously criticised the Punjab government for failing to hospitalise Dallewal despite his deteriorating health and medical advice. The court had consistently sought medical updates on his condition in earlier hearings.
Earlier this month the Punjab police demolished the illegal structures set up by the protesting farmers at the Shambhu and detained farmers including Dallewal.
The farmers were released after several days by Punjab police. Punjab police earlier said that all farmers are safe and there is no need to worry about their detention.
The protesting farmers have several times halted traffic movement and stopped trains which has caused significant loss to the business sector in Punjab.
