Kanlaon volcano in Philippines erupts, spews plume of ash and gas

Manila: On December 9, the Kanlaon volcano in the Philippines erupted, releasing a significant plume of ash and gas, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology. This explosive activity occurred at the volcano’s summit vent in the afternoon, resulting in a substantial column that ascended to about 3,000 meters and drifted towards the west-southwest, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

Known as Mount Kanlaon, this active andesitic stratovolcano is the tallest mountain on Negros Island and reaches an elevation of 2,465 meters, making it the highest peak in the Visayas region. Kanlaon ranks as the 42nd-highest island peak globally. The volcano is located on the border between Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental, roughly 30 kilometers southeast of Bacolod, the capital city of Negros Occidental and the most populous area on the island. It is considered one of the active volcanoes in the country and is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire.
