Kapil Sharma wins ‘Global Entertainer of the Year’ award, recalls humble beginnings 20 years ago

New Delhi: Kapil Sharma, the celebrated stand-up comedian, television host, and actor, received the Global Entertainer of the Year Award at NDTV’s Indian of the Year Awards 2024 in New Delhi on December 6.

Reflecting on his incredible journey, Kapil shared a funny yet touching memory from his past. He mentioned, “Twenty years ago, I came to this hotel to perform as a background singer with another artist. Now, 20 years later, I’m receiving an award here. I’m truly grateful to God.” He expressed his joy at this full-circle moment, highlighting his humble beginnings.

Kapil also recounted his experiences in the entertainment industry, noting, “When I first started my show, they only planned for 24 episodes over three months. Now, it’s been 12 years. My journey has been full of ups and downs. I began with theatre, spent years in Delhi, and then moved to Mumbai. After being selected for a reality show, everything changed for me. It was my first flight, and it felt amazing.”

He also commented on society’s increasing fixation with social media, saying, “We’re too caught up in social media. We may know what’s happening globally, but we might not even be aware if our own father has fallen in the bathroom next door.” Kapil emphasized the importance of limiting social media use, sharing that he has been working on this for several months. He acknowledged that while there are various reasons people engage with social media, it’s crucial to remember that each day offers a new beginning.
