Peel Police investigate tensions at Brampton Temple protest in Canada

Brampton [Canada]: Peel Regional Police responded to a trespassing complaint related to a protest at the Hindu Sabba Temple on The Gore Road in Brampton on November 3 around noon. The protest escalated quickly, leading to safety concerns that prompted officers to seize items that could be used as weapons.

An official press release noted that while officers tried to de-escalate the situation, a video circulating on social media captured a confrontation between a police officer and a protester, which raised community concerns. In response, Peel Regional Police initiated a review of the incident.

In a social media post, Peel Regional Police representative Tyler Bell Morena shared the press release, stating, “Peel Regional Police understands that the video caused concern in the community. We take all complaints about officer conduct seriously and have conducted a review of the incident.” Following the investigation, it was found that the officer’s actions were in line with his duties while attempting to disarm an individual who refused to comply and became aggressive. To enhance transparency, body-worn camera footage of the incident has been released.

Peel Regional Police have established a Strategic Investigative Team to look into any criminal activities that may have occurred during the protests. They are currently seeking public assistance to identify suspects or gather general information related to those events.

The police emphasized their commitment to upholding the right to peaceful assembly as protected by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, while also stating their zero-tolerance stance against violence, threats, or vandalism during such events. “Peel Regional Police is committed to respecting an individual’s right to peacefully assemble. However, there is no tolerance for any acts of violence, threats of violence or vandalism during any peaceful assembly,” the release clarified.

The statement concluded with gratitude for those who worked to maintain peace during the events. As the investigations proceed, police are encouraging the public to share any relevant information to ensure safety during protests.
