PM Modi hails jr hockey team’s ‘unmatched skill, unwavering grit’ after Asia Cup triumph

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his pride in the Indian men’s junior hockey team for their recent victory in the Junior Men’s Asia Cup.

“Congratulations to our hockey champions! This is a historic achievement for Indian hockey as our Men’s Junior Team secures the Junior Asia Cup 2024 title. Their unmatched skill, determination, and outstanding teamwork have etched this win into the history of sports,” PM Modi shared on X.

He added, “Wishing the young champions all the best for their future endeavors.”

In a thrilling final, the Indian junior men’s hockey team triumphed over traditional rivals Pakistan with a score of 5-3, successfully defending their title and claiming a record fifth championship in the tournament’s history. India previously won the title in 2023, 2015, 2008, and 2004.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also congratulated the team, stating, “Heartfelt congratulations to the Indian Junior Hockey Team for making history by defeating Pakistan 5-3 in the Men’s Junior Asia Cup 2024! The entire nation is proud and thrilled by this remarkable achievement. Hats off to the members of Team India! May this winning streak continue uninterrupted; best wishes!” he posted on X.

Araijeet Singh Hundal was a standout performer, scoring four goals in the 4th, 18th, 47th, and 54th minutes, while Dilraj Singh added another in the 19th minute. Captain Shahid Hannan (3′) and Sufyan Khan (30′, 39′) put in commendable efforts to keep Pakistan competitive, but their contributions fell short.

In recognition of their impressive title defense and outstanding performances, Hockey India announced a cash reward of ₹2 lakh for each player and ₹1 lakh for each member of the support staff.
